Eating healthy may seem overwhelming or even impossible to some of you. Do you
dislike grocery shopping because you just don’t know what to buy or what to avoid
buying? If you dislike grocery shopping, try going on off hours when it is less
crowded. This can help take the edge off of this stressful outing. I work with clients
daily, teaching them how to make healthy choices in the grocery store. I encourage
my clients to start slow…..beginning with a basic list of foods needed to get through
a weeks worth of meal planning and cooking. I encourage them to explore new
foods at every grocery store outing, so that they can build their library of healthy
Here are a few very basic tips I address with my clients:
Enter the grocery store with a list and a plan. Stick to the list and don’t over-buy
because you will throw away food from waste.
Don’t grocery shop when hungry because you will most likely purchase food items
that are not on your list.
Shop around the outer perimeter of the grocery store because this is where the
fresh, less processed foods are. Avoid the central aisles whenever possible.
Choose fresh foods when possible. Frozen produce and meats are a great options as
well….especially if you are on a budget.
Read the ingredient list on all products. That list should be short and simple! If there
are a lot of words listed that you don’t understand and you can’t pronounce, chances
are you shouldn’t be eating it.
Left overs are great, so don’t let them get lost in the back of your freezer or
refrigerator. Label your leftovers and keep an organized fridge, freezer and pantry.
Keep your kitchen stocked with some staple food items such as eggs, nuts, seeds, nut
butters, olive oil, vinegars, ground meats, root vegetables and frozen produce.
